Segons Ihde_Selinger2004 a Merleau-Ponty and Epistemology Engines, el concepte Epistemology Engine es pot definir com a:
The idea is that some particular technology in its workings and use is seen suggestively as a metaphor for the human subject and often for the production of knowledge itself. In this essay, we further develop the concept, beginning with two provocative questions.
An “epistemology engine” is a technology or a set of technologies that through use frequently become explicit models for describing how knowledge is produced.
